Back in the “olden” days, when I was a fresh-faced 21 year old, I remember having to trek 10 miles in the snow for my wine. OK, I may be exaggerating just a little, as I did the trekking in a car with heat, BUT I digress. Now that it’s 2017, we live in a world where wine will be – wait for it – delivered to your door. My laziness has never been more enabled.
There are a lot of choices out there for wine subscription services, but we landed on ordering from the fine folks at Bright Cellars during a special sale offer they had available at the time.
According to their website, Bright Cellars goal is to send wines that you may not otherwise have had access to or picked for yourself, and that’s something that really spoke to us. Although we have fine access to wines, Nashville is by no means a wine capital of the world, so it’s fun getting to try out wines that may not be available in our area.
The process is super simple, beginning with a short quiz to gauge what your taste preferences are. Don’t worry, no wrong answers here!
Based on the answers you provide in the quiz, Bright Cellars matches your taste preferences to a selection of wines that you receive each month. Once you’ve finished the quiz, you’ll be asked to enter your email and create a free account, then prompted to enter shipping and payment information to begin the subscription. Before completion of our order, we were shown which wines we’d be receiving. I’m unsure if there’s a way to opt out of the selected wines as we didn’t choose to do so.
We ordered our first box around the middle of the month, and our package arrived promptly a week later. Be sure that you or someone 21 or older can be there to sign for the package. They will NOT leave your wine on your porch, and would you want to leave your defenseless and delicious wine out in the elements anyway? Yeah, me either.
You many not be a packaging nut like me, but I thought they did a lovely and thoughtful job packing the wines securely in the prettiest deep blue-green paper. Each wrapped bottle was secured by a Bright Cellars sticker with a wine quote or pun. Who doesn’t love a good pun?
We didn’t waste too much time ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the packaging though, and got down to checking out our awesome new wines. For having only 7 questions in the quiz, I’m SUPER impressed by the selection they sent us. Grant is a huge fan of Shiraz and Tempranillo varietals, and somehow Bright Cellars picked up on that preference.
Here’s what we received in our box:
Fachada Sauvignon Blanc 2016 | Valle Central, Chile
This is a fresh, crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Valle Central in Chile that sparkles with the aroma of fresh-cut lemongrass and citrus fruit. Enjoy with seafood, a salad with viniagrette, or light, tangy cheeses like fresh goat cheese.
Notes: Lime, Lemon, Floral, Lemongrass, Honeydew, and Green Apple
Kogara Canyon Shiraz 2015 | South Eastern Australia
Kogara Canyon Shiraz is a well-balanced wine with vibrant fruit flavors such as black cherry, blackberry and plum. Enjoy the contrast of spicy black pepper notes mid-palate and silky vanilla characteristics in the finish. Pair with beef brisket, barbecue ribs or chili. Enjoy with smoked Gouda or Cheddar cheese.
Notes: Cherry, Blackberry, Plum, Black Pepper, and Vanilla
Mojave Rain Red Blend 2014 | California, USA
A well-balanced California Red that has enticing aromas of black raspberry, blackberry and plum. Flavors of dried strawberry, earth and spice linger in the finish. This wine is great just on its own! Or enjoy with wild mushrooms over polenta, meat-stuffed ravioli or Italian cheeses.
Notes: Black Raspberry, Blackberry, Plum, Strawberry, and Earth (Like the planet or like dirt? – We aren’t sure…)
Acopio Tempranillo 2015 | Spain
This Spanish Tempranillo is full of ripe berries and plums, complemented by bold tannins and hints of vanilla and baking spice. Enjoy with the traditional pairing of Jamón Ibérico and Manchego cheese.
Notes: Black Cherry, Raspberry, Plum, Vanilla, and Clove
Bootstrap Red Blend 2015 | California, USA
A blend of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah are blended together to create a bold, ripe, berry jam treat! Hints of spice, vanilla and earth become present in the finish. Pair with slow-roasted baby back ribs, barbecued meats or smoked cheeses!
Notes: Raspberry, Cherry, Strawberry, Vanilla, and Spice
The 5 bottles of wine cost $38, which I feel is an insane deal (keep in mind, this was a promotion), coming in at $7.60/bottle. We’ve only tried 2 so far, the Mojave Rain Blend & the Acopio Tempranillo, and they are definitely above average in terms of taste, but not something we’d search out at the store. Once you try your wines, you’re able to go back to the website and rate them on a scale of 1 to 5. This helps Bright Cellars hone in on what you like best and send you similar flavor profiles to try in your next box.
For the cost and ease of the entire process, I would definitely recommend ya’ll give Bright Cellars a try. Their service takes the guesswork out of choosing your own wine at the store, and might give you a new appreciation for a wine you have never had before.
